Survey: Employee Loyalty Is Fading
While some business owners can hardly wait for an economic rebound, the same can be said for employees – albeit for very different reasons. A recent study from Monster.com of 22,400 people found that the majority of workers across the world (89%) would consider a career change. A nearly equal amount (88%) of U.S. workers said they would be interested in switching jobs. This sentiment carries over to most industries, says Jeff Cole, office sales manager for distributor firm. "There are people who are disgruntled who are hanging on," he says. "They couldn’t afford to leave. They want to see if the grass is greener."

Forty-six percent of people polled said they were actively looking for a job while 18% were considering it. This is a boon for businesses that are looking to staff up. "We have been filling positions all year," says Bret Boone. "We’re looking for the right people no matter what the economy is. You can’t afford to not hire. Some of our best hires have come this year. Someone else’s loss is our gain."

Hiring experienced employees is particularly valuable when it comes to sales of ad specialties, says Boone. "We have gotten people that we haven’t even had to train," he says. "The cost of training someone is immense in terms of time and operational costs. Getting someone qualified from the beginning is phenomenal."

However, there are still plenty of inexperienced people looking for new jobs, as well. According to the Monster.com poll, 22% of respondents said they would jump at the first job they found. It’s the nature of the current job market, with unemployment numbers creeping toward double digits. "We still get people with PHDs applying for data entry jobs," Boone says. "People are trying to reinvent themselves."
